Little did we know...

Work was slow yesterday. Not surprising considering it was the day before a holiday weekend. Even so I managed to get a few things done. Good for me. The kid went on a trip with her four grandparents to Sutter Creek.

By 2ish, we had compared notes with the family and made fun plans for the evening. T. and I would leave around 3 to go shopping (a pair of pajamas for T. as one last Christmas present, but maybe other things too, who knows), followed by dinner, exact location unspecified but there were plenty of options near our last destination: a movie theater showing Violent Night

All this would take place within half an hour's drive of T.'s parent's house, so we didn't worry too much about details. T. was driving an SUV that used to be her aunt's. About halfway to the first stop, right as we got on the highway, there was a loud noise and several dashboard lights went on. We guessed we had driven over some piece of trash that temporarily got caught in the axle. We stopped for gas soon. We had no problems getting it and didn't see anything wrong on/under the car, but when we tried to move again, it wouldn't start. We had to push the car into a nearby parking space. Dead battery, apparently, but it was confusing because the car had been fine recently. Some helpful soul saw us and jump-started it. That seemed to work fine for a few minutes, but as soon as T. tried to drive she noticed it had no power steering. We just made it across the lane of parking spaces before it died again.

We called T.'s and our parents. Fortunately they were only about 20 minutes away. T.'s dad, ever the handyman, quickly noticed that the transmission belt or something was missing. We all decided we'd have the car towed and T. and I would take a Lyft and resume our plans for the date night.

Well, Lyft couldn't find a car the first time I tried. They just apparently had no drivers in the area. Nor the second time. Eventually T. reinstalled Uber on her phone and we got a driver there. Amusingly enough, he arrived at the same time as the tow truck. We finally got to the movie theater around 6:15 PM. So dinner was more rushed and casual than we had envisioned. But we still were able to have a meal and drink and enjoy the movie. T.'s dad came to pick us up afterwards.
